Excerpt

At the office, Trish’s cousin, Jenny, had things in hand. Until a new patient came in for a consultation and updated physical.

The woman’s dirty appearance and brashness set the entire office on edge.

To Trish, she squawked. “Your hair is thin and ugly. Fix it with something.”

Toward Jenny, she muttered. “Don’t you eat anything? Walking, talking skeleton.”

Encompassing the office in general, she spat. “Ugly. Small.”

Once in the examination room, her loud voice penetrated the walls with each incoherent complaint.

Luke braced himself before entering. Get her out and on her way. She’s a patient, she’s a patient.

“Hello, Ms. Hampton. How are you today?” Luke smiled, stalwart in his attempts to not cringe at her glare that dared him to step wrong.

“I’m here, ain’t I?” She retorted, shifting her bulky body on the paper-covered bed.

“Yes, ma’am, which brings up my next question. Why are you here?” He flipped the papers on her file over and showed her the blank lines. “Your medical intake sheet states only history of stable diabetes and it’s already being monitored. You have a primary care physician, stated on page two. Not much left for me to cover… Unless you left something out?”

Without hesitation, she bit out. “You’re the doctor, ain’t you? It’s your job to tell me what’s wrong. I can’t tell you what you should know. Isn’t that why you bring in the big bucks?”

Luke’s control slipped a notch. He decided to dismiss her before he made the situation worse. His frame of mind would require less than the proverbial straw to break.

“Tell you what, Ms. Hampton. I’ll call your primary care physician right now and have you go to him. It might be better if you’re seen by a doctor who knows your history.” Luke turned toward the door, anxious to escape.

“No. I won’t go back to his office. I want fixed. Fix me!” She ended on a yell, her shoulders hunched toward him.
