Voices warning Sabriel she'll never succeed, and loyalties torn, she begins to realize that all is not as it seems. Tirich's power is growing stronger, and she fears she was wrong about the good she once saw in him.

Review
4/5

As a child Sabriel was marked for being different, gifted. She was an outcast and the only thing she had was her friend Nick and his brothers. When sickness spread, Nick's family left and she was alone. Her and her father left and joined the knights because they were tired of the king's terror. They are not fighting for the change they think.
I like Sabriel, she is not a whining heroine. She is a warrior and capable. I feel like her gifts were just ignored until they were needed and then nothing. They only talked about Tirich and Selena's gifts. The story kept you invested and was a quick read. It flowed well and I like how it didn't go overboard on the background explanation, but it gave you information. I liked that the story was told from different points of view of the main people. It was also easy to follow who's point of view you were on. I don't like the ending but maybe these characters will get more stories.

The bastard son of the hated king and father he hardly knows, Prince Milosh is considered an outcast. He never expects to feel anything but contempt for the peasant girl who unexpectedly shows up in his life, forcing him to answer questions he never wished to ask.

But will they learn to see beyond their stations and birth so that they may defeat the coming darkness, or will labels given to them at birth continue to define them?

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors
Annette Marie, Rob Jacobsen
(The Guild Codex: Warped, #1)
Published by: Dark Owl Fantasy Inc.
Publication date: August 7th 2020
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

My name is Kit Morris, and welcome to my warped life.

Picture the scene: Me, an average guy with psychic powers—not that my abilities are in any way average—just trying to scrape by in a harsh world. So maybe I’ve conned a few people, but did I really deserve to be thrown in MPD jail alongside magic-wielding serial killers?

According to Agent Lienna Shen, one-hundred-percent yes.

But her hardass attitude and “Arcana prodigy” status aren’t enough to bring down my former best friend, who slipped through the MPD’s fingers and is days away from unleashing untold horrors upon the city. Or he’s going to steal something. I don’t really know.

Whatever he’s up to, that’s why I’m sitting in an interrogation room with Lienna. And that’s why I just offered myself as her temporary new partner for the purposes of thwarting my ex-accomplice.

And that’s how I’m going to escape. I might even help with the case before I cut and run.

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors is the first book in a new series set in the world of The Guild Codex. It can be read on its own or as part of a larger adventure.

So Kit Morris is a psychic who is used as a scape goat by his guild. But then he is needed to help find his old friend. Then the MPD agent Lienna is tasked with keeping him from escaping why their search for Quentin. Eventually Kit escapes, but then realizes he needs Lienna help. Things just keep getting worse and bigger. Plus all the tension between Kit and Lienna.

Honestly it wasn't a bad story it just could not keep myself interested. I felt like it was from the perspective of a bunch of kids in highschool. There were so many extremes and not much realism. Like I feel you couldn't connect with any characters or find anything that made you root for them. I don't know I just got annoyed at all the characters. Felt all the personal relations were forced because the book required it.

Eagles in Flight review tour

Eagles in Flight
Ramcy Diek
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: August 25th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Emma’s life changes the day Ruben Templeton walks in and asks her out on a date. Over dinner, she’s a little disappointed when his best friend, Jesse Kimball, joins them. Jesse is a senator’s son who just announced his candidacy for mayor.
Twenty-seven-year-old Emma is surprised, but excited when it’s Jesse who calls her the next day instead of Ruben.

Jesse introduces Emma to a life with mansions, expensive cars, cocktail dresses, and status. It doesn’t take long for him to sweep her off her feet. He’s handsome and charming, making her feel like the center of his universe.

When Emma receives devastating news, Jesse asks her to marry him. From the moment she agrees, their relationship starts to deteriorate. Desperate to understand why her new husband is so cold and distant, she reaches out to him, only to be met by anger.
Hurt and confused, Emma turns to Ruben for advice.

Ruben suggests they give each other space for a few weeks. Weeks she can use to help him locate his younger brother Axel, who has gone missing. Emma agrees, and soon finds herself on a road trip across the country.

Will Emma and Jesse’s temporary separation clear the distance between them, or will she find love in the arms of another man?

Review

3.5/5

This book was a very interesting book. I can't really figure out what kind of book it's supposed to be. Emma has her own life working at a library and caring for her sick mother. Then an old friend comes into the library and pretends he wants to have dinner to get to know her. Within a couple weeks she is swept up in to politics and Jesse's life.

Pretty quickly everything starts to go south. Her mom does, she gets married and then realizes that it is not what is seems. There is no love. She is convinced, by Ruben, to instead of divorce, help him find his brother and give her time to think.

Honestly I am not sure how I feel about this book. The first half dragged on. Then when she started traveling it was a little more interesting. Then she meets Eagle and everything starts to feel rushed. Like the last 50 pages had so much and was so crammed full. At the end I was just like this is it. I felt it could have been way shorter of a story and been better. I did love Emma though and her mother's and hers relationship. Jesse and Ruben could totally have disappeared and it would have been fine. It actually made me upset that they got a happy ending and no repercussions, other than losing the election, for how horrible they were to Emma.

Author Bio:

A long time ago, I fell in love with the United States while traveling around in an Oldsmobile station-wagon with my husband. We are both born and raised in the Netherlands.
Together, we eventually found our way to the Pacific Northwest, built up a business, and raised our two boys into amazing young adults with their own careers. During this time, I also made a slow transition from reader to writer of many different stories.

My multiple award winning debut novel "Storm at Keizer Manor" sets the bar high for my second novel, Eagles in Flight.
All my books are stand alone novels in different genres. You might be in for a surprise, or a disappointment.

Book Blitz for Random acts of Baby

Random Acts of Baby
Julia Kent
(Random #11)
Publication date: August 14th 2020
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

You know those television stories about the woman who goes to the emergency room thinking she has a bad case of indigestion or kidney stones or a burst appendix and she comes home with a bouncing baby boy?

Stupid woman, right? Who the hell doesn’t know she’s pregnant for nine and a half months? I used to think those mamas were one block short of a level trailer.

Used to.

Random Acts of Baby is the 11th book in Julia Kent’s New York Times bestselling series as Darla, Trevor, and Joe go on a long, crazy journey involving a baby, living two lives, and learning who you can count on most when you need a helping hand.

EXCERPT:

Her hand clamped on my knee, moving up the inseam of my jeans so fast my cock turned into a paratrooper, leaping toward that palm.

“Take the next rest area,” she said, just as we crossed the state line for Ohio.

“What?”

“Old time’s sake.”

Deciphering her words took more effort than it should have. “You need a bathroom? We’re less than half an hour away.”

“I need to ride your one-eyed trouser snake.”

“Huh?”

“I. Want. Sex,” she said slowly, drawing out the words with an aligned tone, as if saying them this way were diplomatic.

“Now? Here? While I’m driving? I’m flexible and up for anything, but not while I’m careening down the Ohio Turnpike at 72 miles per hour. Even I have sexual limits.”

“No. At the nearest rest area.”

“Are you serious?’

“Do I ever joke about sex?”

“No.”

“Then shut up and put on your turn signal.”

Author Bio:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 4 New York Times bestsellers and more than 19 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French and German, with more titles releasing in 2020 and beyond.
From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire she met in a romantic comedy).

She lives in New England with her husband and three children where she is the only person in the household with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.

Book Blitz for The Six Month Lease

The Six Month Lease
Melanie Munton
Publication date: August 18th 2020
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

Never have I ever…moved in with a guy after dating him for only three weeks.

Just kidding. That’s exactly what I did.

And like most of you are probably thinking, it inevitably blew up in my face when we broke up two days after signing our lease.

Now, I’m stuck living with my ex. The same man who turned my life completely upside down in record time.

For. Six. Whole. Months.

It doesn’t matter how many times he flashes those abs at me after a shower, or how close his bedroom is to mine. I will resist him because he’s simply not the right guy for me.

But if I thought he’d done a number on me before, that’s nothing compared to what happens after I finally learn the secret he’s been keeping from me this entire time.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

We touch down on the helipad near Patriot’s Point where we left from. The slab of concrete is on the edge of the now mostly empty parking lot, the park having closed over an hour ago. The sun has lowered in the sky, painting it a pink hue with notes of orange and gold.

West does some more talking into his radio headset while going through the process of shutting the aircraft down, flipping switches and pushing buttons. After I’ve had time to take stock of everything, I realize that I’m coming down from a small adrenaline rush. My chest is heaving, my heart still racing.

Now I really get West’s love for flying. It gives you a high like no other.

Helicopter heroin.

The blades slowly stop rotating until the whooping sound of their spinning eventually ceases. West removes his headphones and unstraps himself. Then he leans over and repeats the same process with me.

But once he has my straps unbuckled, he falls back into his own seat.

Slowly removes his aviators—

And spreads his legs.

It’s only then that I notice the tent between his legs.

“Does that happen every time you fly?” I ask, my gaze lasered in on his lap. “Or is that special for me?”

“It’s always for you,” he answers roughly. “That’s the fucking problem. Nothing does it for me anymore but you. The other night when you went out for drinks with the girls, my hand could barely get the job done, even though it was your naked body I pictured in my head the entire time. It’s like nothing will satisfy except the real you.”

I tsk my tongue. “Poor baby. What do you recommend for the pain?”

He unbuckles his belt, lowers his zipper. “I just gave you a ride.” He reaches inside his briefs, palming his erection. “Now, it’s your turn to give me a nice…long…ride.”

I lick my lips unconsciously, feeling my nipples pucker underneath my breezy, linen dress. “These windows aren’t exactly tinted.”

“No one’s around,” he growls, his face reddening with burning lust. “Plus, the cockpit is facing those trees. No one can see us at this angle.”

My pulse jumps at the word cock.

Wriggling his hips, he shoves his shorts and briefs down past his manhood, freeing his rod until it’s rising straight up in the air. When he wraps his fist around the base, I flashback to how he looked handling the control stick. Gripping it so tight, his fingers absently stroking it when he was letting the aircraft coast.

My God, I never thought helicopters could be so sexual.

I’ll never be able to look at any kind of control stick the same way again.

His eyes lower to my chest. “Come sit on your throne, princess.”

Grande Finale BLitz Ready to Trust

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you'll find snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

(With its own giveaway through August 16th.)

Launch - Author Interview

What inspired you to write READY TO TRUST?

Ready to Trust is the second book in the Hearts of Oklahoma series about the Rainbolt siblings who were raised by the oldest sibling, Mitch. Book 2, Ready to Trust is Reece’s story. I wanted to write about a black sheep who was called back to the flock. That’s Reece. A hunky hero with a heart for the Lord who knows only too well about making mistakes and asking for forgiveness. I think deep down inside I wanted to share that Christian men can be hunky and still be faith heroes.

"A second chance romance, full of family, faith, and heart. It was a fast read for me, because it just grabbed me right out of the gate with a quick hook, and I didn't put it down. Zoe is such an adorable little girl, she is so cute! I also really enjoyed Willard, who adds some years of experience and humor to the story. Highly enjoyable and satisfying read, with amazing characters."

Grief slammed into her like an Oklahoma tornado, pummeling her heart with new aches. Though emotion threatened to spill, she held back tears. She didn’t cry about the past anymore. The past was a lot like what if and Claire didn’t ever go there, because what if was a place for dreamers. She was no longer a dreamer.

"I love stories of reconciliation and forgiveness. Tina Radcliffe has crafted an enjoyable story, set in Oklahoma, that includes forgiveness of past mistakes and reconciliation that doesn’t happen overnight. . . . The characters are likeable and believable – the kind of people you wish were your neighbors. The plot is well-thought-out with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and reading. . . . While it is an adult novel, Ready to Trust would be appropriate for a k-12 Christian school library. High school girls in particular will enjoy this clean romance."

"Let's take a moment to appreciate the hot guy on the cover! Ready To Trust is Tina Radcliffe's second book of her Hearts Of Oklahoma series but can be read as a standalone. This is a fast but meaningful read. . . . I enjoyed reading this book for all the warm fuzzies, humor and inspiration. Tina Radcliffe has written a lovely and charming story that I recommend for fans of contemporary Christian fiction."

Hallie Reads - Review

"As Claire and Reece sort through the complications of their relationship, Radcliffe shares a romance that is delightful to read. I enjoyed getting to know her characters, seeing them move forward from the events and feelings of the past that have held them back for far too long. It is an easy book to recommend to readers in need of a quick and entertaining romance."

"I enjoyed reading this sweet clean romance with beautiful ranch scenery. It took me through a life story of loss, challenges, and love. . . . Zoe was such a cute little girl in this story. Nan, Asa, Daisy, Mitch, and Willard were side characters that made me smile. I loved the side characters! . . . Claire went through hard things in life and so had Reece. I enjoyed watching them slowly but surely grow together."

"The book was a quick and fairly straightforward read. I like that there wasn't a ton of back and forth drama of misunderstandings. . . . I did love that family played an important role in the novel. I look forward to reading more books from the series."

"I really liked Claire, she was someone you could relate to. She has been through so much and dealing with pain and past is hard. Reece though was probably on of the best leading man in a romance novel. . . . I loved that I actually felt what they were feeling. I was on an emotional rollercoaster and didn't want to put the book down. I really enjoyed the story and all the characters"

Pause for Tales - Review

"Reece and Claire have some big issues they need to work through.I enjoyed walking on this journey to true love, albeit a little rocky. . . . This was another delightful romance to curl up with."

"Overall, Ready to Trust is a pleasant contemporary read set in Oklahoma, complete with a ranch, an orchard, horses, and even a goat. . . . The interactions between Reece and Zoe were wonderful to read. . . . There are some great secondary characters in this story who made me smile. They served to spur Reece and Clair to think beyond themselves. I like the diversity of situations and perspectives from the various characters and the wisdom they brought to the story."

"Tina Radcliffe pulls you into a story of finding yourself, finding hope, and learning that God always has a plan. Even if you don’t know what it might be. . . . The storytelling and characters were perfect for a solid can’t-stop-reading. The humor and grace kept the dark moments from becoming too intense while still telling a heartfelt tale.

This one is going on the keeper shelf. The messages of faith, family, and forgiveness will stay with me for a long time."

Wishful Endings - Excerpt

I’m not a long-term kind of guy and I have zero interest in a future...with anyone. The words offered by Reece Rainbolt six years ago mocked Claire as she was seated at a window table at Arrowhead Diner. She stared out the window, fighting the shame of the past. What a fool she’d been—in love with a man who crushed her heart beneath his boot heel and walked away.

Splashes of Joy - Review

"Author Tina Radcliffe does a very nice job of weaving these two families together, hashing out the differences and coming to an ending that will please everyone, or at least it did me. . . . And this sweet romance is sure one that is so much fun to read. I encourage you to check out Ready to Trust for your next fun read."

"Ahh, Ready to Trust by Tina Radcliffe was such a sweet story! . . . and let me say I was not disappointed. . . fun characters, the lighthearted romance, and the sense of community that Tina Radcliffe displayed. A truly enjoyable book with a lighthearted feel"

“If you’d let yourself, you’d have more friends in Rebel than you have fingers and toes. You could find a place for yourself and Zoe here. A good life.”

Claire shook her head. “There are too many memories.”

“Make new memories.”

"This author is one of my favorite Love Inspired authors . I was very excited to read this book. Welcome to Rebel Ranch in Rebel, Oklahoma. This is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. . . . This is a book about second chances and redemptions. The characters are real feeling and well written. The storyline will grab you in the beginning - and you will not want it to end."

". . . a great book. I loved everything about it and laughed out loud at specific points. Ms. Radcliffe did a fantastic job on this novel. Zoe is such a character, and she will be a handful for her parents in her teen years. I am also recommending this book to anyone that reads inspirational clean, and wholesome romances. Or to ones that love to read romance novels!"

"Radcliffe has written a romance which in of itself isn't a romance as it is more of a healing of hearts and a second chance at a new beginning for two characters weather worn from life. She takes you through the motions of how one of them is more willing to let go of the past than the other whilst at the same time, there is this little girl in the middle of it all, too. . . . Overall, what I loved most about the story and the characters is how grounded Reece is now in his life and how important family is to him. . ."

"This is a very cute story about misconceptions, pre-judgements, community unity, overcoming one's past and creating new memories. It is also an inspiring tale about overcoming obstacles and prevailing.

This Christian Fiction will surely uplift and inspire the reader."

"I thought this one was a great read. I loved getting to know Reece and Claire. I could relate to Claire's feelings and her trust issues. It was a delight to read and was easy to keep reading to find out how it would all end.

I am giving Ready to Trust a very well deserved five plus stars."

“No, you didn’t.” His expression darkened. “You trusted your belief that I would let you down like everyone else. You’ve been waiting for it, expecting my betrayal every single day.” He shook his head.

"I loved Reece’s and Claire story in Ready to Trust. . . . Ready to Trust is a wonderful story. I look forward to reading more of the books in the series."

"Tina Radcliff writes a sweet romance. One about change, forgiveness and second chances. Reece and Claire have some big issues to overcome. I love how Zoe stole Reece's heart from the beginning. . . . The book was enjoyable from the first chapter. Engaging and heartwarming."

Rincón de Joss - Excerpt

“Reece? Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked quietly this time.

He sucked in a ragged breath and struggled to calm himself. “I don’t know what I am, to tell you the truth.”

“I understand and I know this isn’t easy,” Nan said. “But try to be kind.”

Uplifting Reads - Review

"This story was so familiar to me for some reason. Then again, I have been reading a lot of these inspirational, second chance and rancher romances lately. I'd say that you have the same general formula as a lot of those books, but Tina makes this story her own and you'll love [following] Claire and Reece along their journey."

"She has a gift for creating realistic characters and such small towns that readers may want to flock to them. . . . I absolutely loved this story . . . Fans of the author and the previous novel are sure to enjoy this book. It was as sweet and precious as the first novel. Overall this is an adorable, heart-tugging, beautiful, peachy treat of a book!"

And he did recall. He’d often find himself in the library watching her shelve books as he struggled over homework assignments. She was always polite when he had questions about locating resource books. Claire was one of the few people at Rebel High who saw him as a person, not just a pretty face or a dumb jock. That was enough to fuel a crush on her that he never told anyone about.

Remembrancy - Review

"The Rainbolt family and the town of Rebel, Oklahoma invite readers in and make them feel so welcome, they will not want to leave. And, even when they’re pushing at each other, every scene with Reece and Claire spending time together is one I devoured.

Add to that the handsome cowboy whose heart is wrapped up in his little girl from the moment he meets her, and you just can’t get much better."

EXCERPT:

I glare down at Connor, my hands balling into angry fists. I so want hurt this man, it isn’t funny. Connor knows why Maxon was kidnapped… only he’s not talking.

“I’ll ask you once again, Father.” Lincoln’s voice drips with menace. “What the hell is going on?”

“Why nothing,” says Connor with a grin.

Over the years, Connor’s ‘jolly old king’ act has gotten really annoying, but never more so than now. We need the truth and fast. At this point, I’d rather he plunge into one of his classic rages rather than smile.

Lincoln takes a half-step closer to his father and glowers down at him. “What do you know about Maxon?”

“I can’t tell you, son.” Connor raises his gaze to meet ours. Bit by bit, his smile fades. “All I can say is this. I’ve been waiting for years to find someone like Hildy. She’s exceptional. A prodigy. She’s exactly what we need. We’ll all be safe now.”

He takes two steps toward the door before Lincoln pins him to the wall, his forearm pressing against Connor’s throat. My own breath catches. Lincoln is almost out of control.

“Out with it.” Lincoln pushes harder onto Connor’s neck. “What do you know?”

Octavia rises to stand beside me, her face pale. I know how she feels. I’ve never seen Lincoln so angry.

Connor gasps for breath. “I ca… I won’t….”

Octavia’s hands flutter by her chin. “My son, what are you doing?”

“You know damn well what I’m doing.” Lincoln re-slams Connor against the wall, only with more force this time around. “You find the strength and tell me, Father. Now.”

“Lin… Lincoln…” Connor’s face turns purple.

“What do you know?” Lincoln’s voice raises to a roar. “Stop being a weak, self-centered worm for once in your life. Find the strength to tell me what’s happening to my son!” Connor’s face turns a deeper shade of purple. His eyes roll back into his head.

“Lincoln, stop it,” I say. “You’re choking him.”

“I’m not choking him.”

Lincoln steps back and Connor crumples to the floor, gasping for breath. The purple hue stays on his face a few seconds too long to be natural.

Unholy Hell. I know what that means. Connor’s under a magical compulsion. Whatever he knows, he can’t speak of it.

EXCERPT:

From Inquisitor:

Autumn had come, and I was powerless to stop it—this time. A yellowed leaf clung to its branch, mocking me with its splash of color. The rest of Central Park clung to the hope of summer. I stood on my toes and snatched at it, but a chilly wind ripped it from my reach.

The leaf landed on the path several steps away. When I reached it, I crushed it beneath my boot.

“Wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, Allison?”

I twisted my heel while wrinkling my nose. With light brown hair and creamy skin prone to burning rather than tanning, Mark would never be my tall, dark, and handsome, though he was good looking and aggressive with his money. With my sort of luck, he’d never account for anything more than an occasional lunch buddy who needed my help with his finances. Then again, maybe it was better for both of us that way.

Some girls had all the luck. Me? I had more money than I knew what to do with, most of it acquired from Mark in management fees like I was some sort of modern-day vampire. Too bad money couldn’t buy me a life.

“Who said I went to bed last night?” Hopefully, he wouldn’t think too long or hard on my delayed quip.

“What’s got your tail in a bunch?”

I shoved my hands in the back pockets of my jeans and swallowed my relieved sigh. No tail. Good. Last thing I needed was to sprout a tail on Halloween at noon. “N-nothing. You’re always ‘blah, blah, blah, something’s wrong.’ Nothing’s going on.”

Mark arched his brow at me. “So what did that poor little leaf do to you?”

“It failed its calculus test twice.”

Why Can’t Freshman Summer Be Like Pizza?
Andy V. Roamer
(The Pizza Chronicles #2)
Publication date: June 1st 2020
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

RV, having successfully completed his freshman year at the demanding Boston Latin School, is hoping for a great summer. He’s now fifteen years old and looking forward to sharing many languid summer days with his friend Bobby, who’s told him he has gay feelings too. But life and family and duties for a son of immigrant parents makes it difficult to steal time away with Bobby.

Bobby, too, has pressures. He spends part of the summer away at football camp, and his father pushes him to work a summer job at a friend’s accounting firm. Bobby takes the job grudgingly, wanting to spend any extra time practicing the necessary skills to make Latin’s varsity football team.

On top of everything, RV’s best friend Carole goes away for the summer, jumping at an opportunity to spend it with her father in Paris. Luckily, there is always Mr. Aniso, RV’s Latin teacher, to talk to whenever RV is lonely. He’s also there for RV when he inadvertently spills one of Bobby’s secrets, and Bobby is so angry RV is afraid he is ready to cut off the friendship.

EXCERPT:

After dinner tonight Dad asked me to help him prepare for the test. Yay! He’s finally stopped procrastinating. When I walked into his little study he was flipping through the test-prep booklet. But he didn’t look like he was studying. Instead he was turning the pages haphazardly and frowning. No, scowling is more like it. That’s more powerful than frowning, right? Kind of like frowning to the umpteenth power.

When he saw me he put the book down and started complaining again. About a lot of things. He told me that the immigration process was all a money-making racket. That it showed the country didn’t really want immigrants. That trying to become a citizen the honest way was foolish because there were easier, dishonest ways to do it. That he’d never learn all the questions no matter how hard he tried.

I just stood there not knowing what to say. Dad just can’t help himself, can he? Why does he get into his complaining mode so easily? We get so sick of it. And I knew what he’d say next—that he might just pack his bags and go back to the Old Country.

“Good. Then go!” Mom says when she gets exasperated with him at times like this. Ray and I aren’t brave enough to say anything. Correction. I’m not brave enough to say anything. Ray isn’t afraid. Of course he often gets a good wallop for talking back to Dad, but maybe the pleasure of talking back outweighs any physical pain he feels on his ass.

Dad suddenly stopped talking as if he noticed me for the first time. He took a deep breath, asked me to sit down, and handed me the prep booklet. Good, at least he’s going to try, I said to myself.

He told me to ask him some questions. I found the pages with test questions and we started. I tried to ask Dad easy questions first, to give him a boost. Questions like “Who’s the current President?” and “What’s the ocean on the western side of the United States?”

Dad got those questions right. Progress! But he’s got a long way to go because when we got to the harder questions, he either shook his head or gave the wrong answer. I can see I’ll have my work cut out for me for the rest of the summer. Another little chunk of summer gone. It feels weird, like I’m the parent and Dad is the child. But I do want both Mom and Dad to become citizens, so Dad will stop talking about going back to the Old Country.

Dad was quiet again after he couldn’t answer the harder questions. He was staring off into space, not looking angry anymore. Instead he looked lost. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to leave and I didn’t. Here was this big guy I’m usually so afraid of looking like a little kid. A lost little kid.

Ar nori sustoti?” I asked. “Do you want to stop?” I told him we could continue another time.

He looked at me. “Nežinau.” “I don’t know.” He kept staring at me, but he wasn’t really focusing on me. It was as if he was looking through me, focusing on something far way. I asked him again if he wanted to stop.

He ignored my question and shrugged. “Gal šitas kraštas ne man.” “Maybe this country is not for me.” He kept repeating it. “Gal šitas kraštas ne man.”

He stopped and asked me what I had just said. I told him I didn’t say anything. I was just waiting for him to continue. He nodded and told me to ask him some more questions. But I could tell he wasn’t into it, and he kept getting most of the answers wrong.

I don’t know how long we both stayed there going over that dumb booklet. Dad’s thoughts were somewhere far away and we didn’t make much progress.

I finally mumbled something like, “Okay, I’ve got to do things for Mom. We can continue this another time.”

He nodded, still staring out into space. I slunk out of room, glad to leave.

But I was still thinking about Dad. Seeing him so sad got me really upset. I had never seen him like that. I felt bad for him. And for me too. Dad and I would have to work extra hard to pass that test. I’m determined to work as hard as we need to. There is no way I’m going let him take us back to Old Country. I’m still struggling to fit in here in my own country, which is hard enough.
